Sam recently took some time to speak with YCN about his inspirations and influences, as well as the current and future projects he will be working on.



What are the processes involved in making your images?

I like to work quite impulsively at first, roughly sketching elements which slowly evolve into a more composed, considered drawing. I’ll then use this as a base for the image, and trace the composition with a paintbrush and ink to create several individual coloured layers. Most of the texturing and final tweaking happens digitally.

Who or what inspires and influences your work?

There's a handful of contemporary illustrators that I definitely admire, but I think that my style is more inspired by a combination of the awkward characterization of pre-renaissance tapestries and the colours of Sixties psychedelia.

Is there a particular project you have enjoyed working on recently?

I can't think of a commission that I haven't enjoyed in some way! But the most recent piece that I've worked on was pretty good. It was a contribution to the Silver Screen Society inspired by The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. It’s always nice to work on a collaborative project just for the love of it.

What would your dream commission be?

I would love to work on a campaign for some kind of wildlife charity or anything that'd involve drawing lots of forests and mountains. That'd be great.

What's next for Sam Brewster?

As well as continuing to evolve and experiment as an illustrator, I’m really looking forward to starting a new working relationship with YCN. On top of this, I’m also excited to be working together with a good writer friend of mine, Sam Halfpenny, to direct short films under the banner of Sam & Sam.
